When one thinks about Pavones, one thinks about surfing. Pavones is is of Costa Rica’s favorite surf beach, with longest left in the country, avid surfers claim to get at least a 3 minute ride on it!
You will find Pavones 15 kms South of Playa Zancudo, some 400kms South of the capital of San Jose. While the best surf beach of Central and South America, there is a lot more to do there than surf! You can try a Canopy Tour, go horseback riding, or kite surfing, a nice alternative.
There is a lot of hiking to do and bird and animal watching to do. Swimming of course, and sunbathing too, once you have tried everything else! If you like to explore further, there are some very interesting beach at the north of Pavones, away from the crowd and sometimes noisy surfers.
Accommodations in Pavones always were a little bit basic however some nicer hotels have emerged these last few years. Pavones is also a good place to go to if you like to get back in touch with nature and away from the busy cities. It is actually located in Golfo Dulce, a unique location as it is one of the only tropical fjords of the world. It has some deep water going 185 meters down, and humpback whales are frequently observed while they are on the annual migrating voyage. Across the golf is the Osa Peninsula and Corcovado that are recognized to hold one of the most special and unique reserve of flora and fauna of the world. It is not without any reason that its prime forest has been declared to be one of the most biological intensive area of the planet!
Pavones locals are pretty international and diverse, with people from the US and Europe, Australia, New Zealand, etc. From retired people to surfers, passing through yoga instructors to biologist and naturalists, it has it all. The towns has now all the amenities necessaries, that includes shops, restaurants, schools, clinics and and really good infrastructure. Whether you are a surfer or not, Pavones is definitely a part of Costa Rica everybody should visit.
