Papagayo is located in the Northern part of Guanacaste near the Nicaraguan border and along the Pacific coast. With its beautiful twelve white sand bays, clear dark blue water and splendid views, it is the lesser populated part of Guanacaste, yet the most stunning; it is home to luxurious all inclusive resorts such as the Four Seasons but there are no beach towns built and there and some very good, small and intimate hotels as well; this area is still very pristine and wild, with its untamed beaches and infinite horizons it is the perfect place to go if you want to get away from everything and everyone, and if you are a sun and sea worshipper.
It is close to Rincon de la Vieja National Park and Volcano and Santa Rosa while the capital of Guanacaste, Liberia, with its international airport, is also an easy distance away.
Papagayo’s stunning beaches are excellent for scuba diving, swimming and surfing, sports fishing, depending on where you go, and it has also the only beach that is good for wind surfing in Costa Rica; in Bahia Salinas ( also known as Bolanos Bay) windsurfing is possible just about all year around, depending on the day.
Papagayo is also the traditional place for bird watchers and nature lovers. The wilderness is awesome, the peace and beauty hard to beat, and there are few mosquitoes to fight.
The beaches are usually lined by coconut or almond trees giving the little shade you need to stay a little longer, and the sunsets are every time even more spectacular. While some beaches offer calm waters perfect for swimming and snorkeling, others, such as Witches Rock, are famous avid surfers destinations.
The government of Costa Rica and the Papagayo Tourist Project monitor the expansion of the region and the sustainable progress protects the gulf against over-development such as what has taken place in other areas of the country. When in Papagayo, visit Playa Blanca, Playa Arenilla, Playa Escondida, playa Pez Vela. Little towns like Sardinal are just a short drive away too. For more popular beaches, visit Playa de Coco, Playa Ocotal, Playa Flamingo and Play Hermosa.
In short, it can be said that Papagayo is one of the most stunning spot of Costa Rica, a “must see” without a doubt!
