Playa Matapalo is in the Northern Region of Guanacaste on the Pacific Coast, in Papagayo. Guanacaste is considered to be the most popular tourist destination of Costa Rica, and it is easy to see why! This part of the country is less humid and tropical than the rest of the country, the climate is usually hot and dry with dry tropical forests and the plain are not unlike the Savannah of Africa; it is cattle country and farmers and ranchers work on horseback.
These cowboys are called Sabaneros and are pretty much part of the landscape and of the local culture. Rodeos play an important part in Guanacaste and even the smallest towns will have its fiestas with lots of local food, drinks, to the sound of the local music called Marimba, and, well, horses and cattle!
While the interior is cowboy land, the coast, especially Papagayo, consists of long, wild and majestic bays. Playa Matapalo is one of these wonderful beaches where peace, relaxation and a close contact with nature are hand in hand with scuba diving, swimming, snorkeling and fishing. While this is not strictly speaking a surfing beach, there are plenty of neighboring beaches with good waves. Eco-tourism is plentiful in the volcanic regions and there are many National Parks and refuges to visit.
This exotic grey sanded beach with its transparent blue water, surrounded by wild vegetation and wildlife is as idyllic and extraordinary as anyone can imagine, and perfect for those seeking to escape the harsh and fast life of the city. There are very few small fishing villages scattered around and you are being entertained by Mother Nature and the natural elements! Sunsets in this part of the world are absolutely outstanding.
There are few beaches that can offer so much contrast, giving you the escape you seek while being conveniently close to the Daniel Oduber International Airport in Liberia. A truly extraordinary place to visit and who knows, settle down!
